The Arts in Healthcare Project

An outreach program of

The Family Therapy Center of Virginia Tech

Dedicated to the use of the creative arts as a healing influence

The mission of The Arts in Healthcare Project is to promote the healing uses of the creative arts in healthcare.  Patients, families, and caregivers are invited to experience the joy of art- making in the studio located at Willowbank Creative Center.

We provide individual, family, and group opportunities to explore the challenges of living with diabetes, cancer, infertility, aging, and other chronic conditions.  For information on
our study on the effects of creative arts experiences on the sense of well-being in cancer patients,

Workshops and Groups

“Once I started sculpting the clay mask the first thing that came into my mind was something that I’d seen months before; a ritual in an African tribe where mothers hold their children down while the father cuts patterns and designs in the child’s face. When interviewed the parents explain the importance of knowing that life is full of pain.  One cannot live until one has felt pain. … I see the pain and suffering I have felt, but I also see fierce eyes with determination.”

Art and Healing Open Studio

Meditative art, guided visualizations, and music evoked imagery experiences with an focus on healing the soul.  Join us once a month for drawing, painting, listening, and sharing in a supportive and caring environments.

Next meeting TBA

“Started with a happy face, felt pretty good that day … but the paint kept dripping and I realized while my head was OK my body kept wanting to cry.  [I] added the crown and feathers to show jauntyness and humor to balance the sad --- made her a “super saint” as if she is “Cancer Wonder Woman” or some super hero.”

Finding the Creative Fire

A research project exploring the use of the creative arts with cancer patients.

Emotional Freedom Techniques:

An Introduction

EFT is a simple, do-it-yourself procedure that involves focusing on a problematic feeling while tapping on acupuncture points for a minute or so.  The process looks a little peculiar, but the results are amazing—rapid, often long-lasting relief from a wide range of problems.  Workshop is conducted by Paula Markham who has used EFT for nearly five years in her practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Personal Development Coach.

Next offering: TBA
